Match Reports

August 31st -     Hethersett     3     The Grove     3

TEAM: Chris Bolderstone, D. Freeman, Matt Steward, Chris Smedmor, James Rice, Matt Thurlow, Lee Barrett, Matt Cartledge, Stuart Catchpole, James Pipe, Ross Potter. Subs - Danny Holman, Lewis Allen

Hethersett kicked off the 2008-09 season with a 3-3 draw with The Grove. New signings Dave Freeman, Stuart Catchpole and Matt Thurlow all made their home debuts in a strong looking Hethersett side.

The game was extremely tight early on with James Pipe and Lee Barrett creating some half chances and The Grove goalkeeper making a world class save from a Matt Steward header. The Grove took the lead midway through the first half after Hethersett fell asleep at a free kick. Hethersett battled back and equalised just before half time after a miscued shot from Chris Smedmor fell into the path of Lee Barrett who coolly slotted home.

The 2nd half began the same with both teams very evenly matched but once again it was The Grove who took the lead after Hethersett switched off at a short corner and allowed The Grove a free strike at goal, The Grove player drilling the ball into the bottom corner. Moments later Chris Bolderstone made a great save, tipping the ball onto the inside of the post. This galvanised Hethersett into action and The Grove failed to clear a corner Ross Potter nodded down for Lee Barrett to easily finish. It was from another corner that Hethersett took the lead for the first time in the game. The original corner was only partially cleared and Ross Potter delivered the ball back into the box for Matt Thurlow to head home on his Hethersett debut.

Hethersett looked to hang on for all 3 points but conceded after the defence failed to deal with a long ball and The Grove striker coolly slotted home.

Both teams had chances in the closing stages but the game finished 3-3 which was fair result.

April 19th                        Hethersett         1          Norwich Busmen      1 *

After extra-time, Hethersett lost 4-3 on penalties.

Hethersett were desperately unlucky to go out of the Norwich Sunday League Cup at the semi-final stages on penalties after the game ended all square at 1-1 after extra-time. Busmen opened the scoring virtually from the kick off and dominated much of the first half with the slope advantage. After the break, Hethersett came back into the game and John Curtis equalising after 60 minutes with a long range shot that the 'keeper was unable to hold onto. Hethersett had chances to win the game but failed to break down a solid Busmen team. Hethersett missed one and had another penalty saved and Busmen only missed one to go through to the final.

TEAM: S. Moseley, J. Loughlin, D. Holman, M. Steward, M. Cartledge, J. Rice, J. Curtis, D. Jones, L. Barrett, L. Allen, D. Gray, C. Kew, P. Norman, P. Grimwood.

April 26th                        Hethersett         0      Marlborough       2

May 3rd                         Hethersett     7        Bertrams       0

Hethersett approached this match knowing that six points from their final two games would save them from relegation and they made short work of a poor Bertrams side who could still go down themselves. Hethersett were just a goal up at half-time but after the break scored with ease and the margin of victory could have been much greater.

TEAM: S. Moseley, D. Freeman, M. Garrod, M. Barrett, M. Steward, D. Jones, J. Tarrant, J. Curtis, L. Barrett, S. Catchpole, S. Wenham, T. Parke, L. Allen, D. Holman

May 10th                             Mattishall YCOB     0      Hethersett     23

The season ended in farce for Hethersett as they visited Mattishall needing a win to avoid relegation. Mattishall started the game with just seven players and played most of it with nine. Hethersett were 11-0 up at half-time and continued to score at will throughout the second half to turn a -20 goal difference into a +3.

TEAM: S. Moseley, D. Freeman, M. Barrett, D. Jones, M. Cartledge, J. Curtis, D. Self, J. Tarrant, L. Allen, L. Barrett, S. Catchpole, D. Holman, R. Potter
