This Ben Smith Memorial Cup third round tie was abandoned at half-time following a blizzard that obliterated the line markings and made the pitch unplayable. December 6th                  Hethersett      3         Mulbarton Wanderers    2

Hethersett turned giantkillers in this Ben Smith Memorial Cup third round match against opponents from three divisions higher in a match switched to Little Melton due to a waterlogged pitch at Hethersett.

Hethersett thoroughly deserved to win. They took an early lead through Jay Back only for Mulbarton to equalise immediately. Hethersett took a half-time lead with a thundering free-kick from Kai Bartlett. After the break Hethersett had to withstand considerable pressure but Danny Gray made it 3-1 when he touched home a loose ball after the 'keeper could only parry a shot. Mulbarton pulled a goal back but Hethersett were determined not to concede and equaliser.

December 27th                  Hethersett       4     Methwold        2

Hethersett struggled to keep their 100% record despite having all the territorial advantage against Methwold and missing so many chances that the game almost turned into a farce. Hethersett opened the scoring early on through Matt Steward and made it 2-0 when a Danny Gray header was adjudged to have crossed the line before being cleared. Methwold pulled a goal back from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time. Hethersett squandered chance after chance after the break and almost paid for it when Methwold equalised with virtually their only attack of the half. Hethersett put some sanity back into the game when James Rice gave them the lead and Matt Molloy rounded off the scoring deep into stoppage time.

TEAM: Ryan O' Sullivan, Nick Shorten, James Rice, Jay Back, Paul Grimwood, Andy Oliver, Jack Tarrant, Matt Steward, Chris Kew, Danny Gray, Gary Davis, Richard Manington, Matt Molloy

January 3rd                   Hethersett      16        Shropham Reserves     0

Hethersett opened the new year with a goal fest against a very poor Shropham team. It took Hethersett 14 minutes to open the scoring but from that point goals flowed with great regularity. Danny Gray hit four in the first half including two penalties and Gary Davis hit a first half hat-trick with Matt Steward making it 8-0 at half-time. Gray added his fifth before Paul Grimwood got in on the scoring act with a second half hat-trick that also included a penalty. James Rice added two more and other goals came from Jay Back and Scott Newstead as Hethersett made it 12 league wins out of 12. Grimwood also missed a penalty and Shropham had a player sent off for a push against Danny Gray.

Saturday Side Off but Presentation On

The Saturday side's top of the table game against Hindolveston was called off due to a frozen pitch on Saturday but it didn't prevent the presentation of the Crown Fire South and Central Norfolk League's team of the month award for August/September when we went unbeaten in the league and all cup competitions. League assistant secretary Mick Utting (who himself has had close connections in the past with football in Hethersett) presented a new match ball and congratulated the side on its success to date. A picture of the presentation is shown above. This Saturday we visit Division Two side Hingham Athletic Reserves in the Ben Smith Memorial Cup.

January 17th                        Hingham Reserves    2      Hethersett   8

February 14th                     Thurton and Ashby   1     Hethersett    3

Hethersett made it 15 wins out of 15 in their relentless march towards the Crown Fire South and Central Norfolk League Division Four title with a battling win over Thurton in one of their harder matches of the season so far.

Hethersett were also presented with the Crown Fire team of the month trophy for the second time this season by league assistant secretary Mick Utting. It took Hethersett 28 minutes to break the deadlock when the referee ruled that a Matt Steward header had crossed the line. Thurton were back on level terms five minutes from half-time.

Hethersett had slope advantage after the break and two goals in a minute on the hour mark made the points safe. Firstly Steward headed home from a corner and then Paul Norman made it 3-1 after he finished off a good run and cross from Paul Grimwood.

TEAM: Ryan O' Sullivan, Nick Shorten, Chris Kew, James Loughlin, Jay Back, Paul Norman, Andy Oliver, Matt Steward, Danny Gray, Adam Waters, Paul Grimwood, Sam Hogg, Jack Tarrant, Matt Molloy

TEAM: Ryan O'Sullivan, Nick Shorten, Matt Steward, James Loughlin, Andy Oliver, Paul Grimwood, Paul Norman, Jack Tarrant, Chris Kew, Sam Hogg, Danny Gray, Gary Davies, Matt Molloy, Ricki Allen

February 28th                 Methwold        2       Hethersett     8

This result ensures that Hethersett will be promoted from Division Four of the Crown Fire Central and South Norfolk League and they need just five points from their remaining five games to take the title. Hethersettt started quickly with two goals from Danny Gray and two from Chris Kew  to stamp their authority over a team who had given them a close run game earlier in the season.

Danny Gray completed his hat-trick before half time meeting a well flighted cross and scoring with a rare header. A little lapse in concentration let Mthwold score before half time

Methwold got a chance and scored a second but Hethersett proved too strong with goals from Matt Molloy. A fourth for Danny and wrapped up by Matt Steward.

March 7th                      Hethersett       6       North Elmham    0

We had a crowd!!!! And on the right is hat-trick hero Danny Gray who scored with a scorching 25 yard drive.

Hethersett produced a stunning performance to knock former holders North Elmham out of the Ben Smith Memorial Cup. It was the second division one scalp for the team and gave them a home semi-final against Foulsham Reserves in April.

Hethersett put in a wonderfully assured performance and 'keeper Chris Bolderstone hardly had a save to make. Hethersett opened the scoring after just 4 minutes through Andy Oliver and Danny Gray made it 2-0 just five minutes later. Both were beautifully crafted opportunist goals.

Paul Norman made it 3-0 after 58 minutes and a James Loughlin shot was adjudged to have crossed the line before being clawed back by the 'keeper. Gray made it 5-0 five minutes from time before completing his hat-trick with the goal of the season two minutes from time when he thundered in an unstoppable shot from 25 yards.

You can view Danny Gray's final two goals - including that goal of the season on a special You Tube page which can be accessed by clicking here.

April 4th                         Hethersett        4       Foulsham    Res     1

TEAM: Chris Bolderstone, Matt Steward, James Loughlin, Nick Shorten, James Rice, Paul Norman, Chris Kew, Jack Tarrant, Paul Grimwood, Gary Davis, Danny Gray, Matt Molloy, Sam Hogg, Andy Oliver

Hethersett reached the final of the Ben Smith Memorial Cup with a solid display against Division Two side Foulsham Reserves. They will now meet top Division One side Saham Toney in the final at Dereham FC on May 4th.

Hethersett came out of the traps at breakneck speed and were a goal up after just over a minute. The 'keeper made a fine save to concede a corner and from the kick Paul Grimwood turnd the ball home. The lead was short-lived, however, as Foulsham hit back to equalise after four minutes. Hethersett had territorial advantage in the first half but failed to turn it into goals.

It was different after the break, however, as Hethersett scored three times through a Danny Gray brace and another from substitute Sam Hogg. Paul Grimshaw had an effort disallowed as Hethersett finished well on top to book their place in the final.

Main Action (pictures courtesy of Foulsham FC and reproduced with their kind permission). Click on them to see larger images.

1at minute - Hethersett immediately went onto the attack and Danny Gray had a header tipped over the bar by the Foulsham keeper. From the corner the ball fell to Paul Grimwood who turned it in to make it 1-0

4th minute - Foulsham hit back almost immediately to equalise with a shot into the roof of the net from an oblique angle.

The Foulsham keeper made a number of fine saves to prevent Hethersett regaining the lead.

32nd minute - Foulsham almost took the lead but Chris Bolderstone was alert and dived at the feet of an on-rushing forward.

59th minute - Andy Oliver and Paul Norman combined well to set up Danny Gray and he made no mistake to give Hethersett the lead.

63rd minute - Hethersett had a perfectly good goal disallowed. They won a free kick on the edge of the area for a foul. Paul Grimwood stepped up to fire hard and low only to have the effort disallowed as the referee had ordered an indirect free kick!

67th minute The ball fell nicely for Danny Gray to head home to give Hethersett a 3-1 lead

75th minute Sam Hogg finished off another good move to put the match beyond doubt.

April 11th                               Hethersett             4      Gressenhall  Res     1

Hethersett reached their second cup final of the season with a comfortable win over Gressenhall Reserves in the Fen Regis Invitation Shield. Hethersett were always in control although heavy rain made conditions very difficult. Danny Gray and Paul Norman gave Hethersett a 2-0 half-time lead. Gressenhall pulled a goal back in the second half but Gray added two more to complete a hat-trick and equal the club's  goalscoring record for a season (70) and take Athletic into a final against Gressenhall's first team. Results elsewhere also made Hethersett champions of Division Four of the Crown Fire South and Central Norfolk League.
