After a goalless first half, the match could have gone either way with Northwold looking stronger in midfield but Hethersett having the better chances on the break. Midway through the second half Nick Benfield opened the scoring when he rose above a static Northwold defence to head home a Danny Gray corner. Northwold went close to equalising when a long distance thunderbolt looked to have beaten Ryan O'Sullivan but the keeper managed to get his finger tips to the effort and that was enough to turn it onto the bar with the defence scrambling the ball clear. Nick Simons came on to liven Hethersett up front and he scored the second goal just a minute from time as he stroked it home. TEAM - Nick Shorten, Ryan O'Sullivan, Joe Barrett, Matt Steward, James Loughlin, Andy Oliver, Matt Molloy, Paul Norman, Mark Lance, Danny Gray, Gary Davis, Chris Kew, Nick Benfield, Nick Simons. We were named Crown Fire South and Central League team of the month for November and December. January 23rd Hethersett 3 Lynn Discovery 5 Hethersett's good run in the Norfolk Primary Cup came to an end despite a good performance against a very strong Lynn Discovery team. TEAM - Nick Shorten, Ryan O'Sullivan, Joe Barrett, Matt Steward, Matt Aiton, Andy Oliver, Chris Kew, Paul Norman, Mark Lance, Danny Gray, Gary Davis, Sam Hogg, Nick Benfield, Nick Simons February 6th Bawdeswell 2 Hethersett 2 Hethersett returned to league action with a hard-earned point at Bawdeswell. Despite having the majority of the chances, Hethersett found themselves 2-1 down as the game entered its final stages. Matt Steward popped up to notch the equaliser to add to an earlier goal from Danny Gray. TEAM: Ryan O'Sullivan, Sam Hogg, Nick Shorten, Matt Steward, Matt Aiten, Mark Lance, Andy Oliver, Paul Norman, Danny Gray, Gary Davis, Chris Kew, Matt Molloy, Richard Manington, Nick Benfield February 13th Hethersett 4 Sporle 0 Hethersett are through to their third cup final of the past two seasons after a comfortable victory over Sporle in the Crown Fire Pease League Cup semi-final. Perhaps the scoreline flattered the home side, but they were always in control and Sporle rarely posed a threat. Danny Gray opened the scoring in the first half when his centred free kick found its way into the net without anybody getting a touch on it. In the second half Matt Steward rose above the defence to head home a corner and two goals in a minute from Gray and Andy Oliver sealed victory. Hethersett will meet Castle Acre Swifts in the final. TEAM: Ryan O'Sullivan, Sam Hogg, Nick Shorten, Matt Aiton, Matt Steward, Mark Lance, Andy Oliver, Paul Norman, Danny Gray, Nick Simons, Matt Molloy, Chris Kew, Joe Barrett, Adam Waters February 20th Hethersett 3 Great Cressingham 0 TEAM: Ryan O'Sullivan, Sam Hogg, Joe Barrett, Matt Molloy, Nick Shorten, Adam Waters, Matt Aiton, Paul Norman, Danny Gray, Nick Simons, Chris Kew, Danny Wade, Gary Davis, Daniel Petchey February 27th Sporle 1 Hethersett 1 (Hethersett won 4-2 on penalties) Incredible is the only word fit for this replayed Pease League Cup semi-final which saw Hethersett desperately hang on and then win the game in a penalty shoot out in a match full of incident, Hethersett had been ordered to replay the semi-final after fielding an ineligible player in the first game. Originally the replayed game was down for the Memorial Playing Field but was switched to Sporle because of a waterlogged pitch. On a boggy pitch with a huge slope, Hethersett took the lead after 10 minutes as Matt Steward rose to head home a Danny Gray centre for his 150th goal for the club. Hethersett then failed to capitalise on going down the slope as both teams missed chances. In the second half Hethersett had to defend for great periods and Sporle deservedly equalised after 77 minutes. Both teams hit the woodwork and had shots cleared off the line. Then Ryan O' Sullivan was sent off for handling outside his area when the last man and Hethersett clung on to take the game into extra-time. Both sides had their chances but the score stayed at 1-1 and went to penalties. Gary Davis scored for Hethersett, Sporle equalised, Paul Norman scored, Sporle shot wide, Adam Waters had his penalty saved and Sporle scored to level things at 2-2. Chris Kew scored to make it 3-2 and then stand-in keeper Nick Shorten produced a fine save to leave Danny Gary to coolly slot the ball home to take us through to the final. TEAM: Ryan O'Sullivan, Sam Hogg, Joe Barrett, Mark Lance, Matt Steward, Danny Gray, Matt Molloy, Paul Norman, Andy Oliver, Nick Shorten, Nick Simons, Adam Waters, Gary Davis, Chris Kew. Hethersett survived some early scares to take a half-time lead through Danny Gray. Hethersett took total control after the break with Danny Gray making it 2-0 with a free-kick, Lance adding his second and Adam Waters and James Rice completing the scoring late on. It was a close game with defences on top but both sides had their chances but failed to take them. TEAM : Ryan O' Sullivan, Matt Molloy, Joe Barrett, James Loughlin, Nick Shorten, Chris Kew, Paul Norman, Nick Simons, Matt Aiton, Adam Waters, Danny Gray, Daniel Petchey, Gary Davis May 8th Hethersett 2 Northwold 1 Hethersett snatched runners-up slot and promotion from the Crown Fire South and Central Norfolk League Division Three thanks to a nerve-racking win against fellow promotion contenders Northwold. Hethersett knew that victory would give them second place and see them leapfrog over Castle Acre on goal difference. A draw would see them finish second but defeat would see them drop to fourth place. Hethersett started well and raced into a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Gary Davis opened the scoring with a clever lob after a flowing movement and Matt Steward doubled the lead when he headed home a Danny Gray free kick. Hethersett looked to be coasting at half-time but Northwold came out strongly in the second half and Hethersett were forced to defend for large periods of time although they should have scored on the break on a number of occasions. Northwold pulled a goal back in stoppage time and Hethersett had to cling on for the all important win.
