Match Reports

August 15th - Hethersett  3   Chelmsford  3

Hethersett faced a tough start to their Eastern Region Premier League season at home to an experienced, strong Chelmsford side that challenged all year for the league only to be pipped late on by Braintree at the end of the previous campaign. Hethersett put out a typically young side with 16 year old twins Sophie and Vicki Lubbock making debuts in goal and central defence respectively, and Luci Middleton playing for the first time partnering Emma Mulley as a striker. In the absence of regular captain Kate Ellis, Lauren Bailey was handed the armband.

Hethersett started brightly with Middleton particularly impressing throughout on debut, and caused Chelmsford problems early on. The home side took the lead when a free kick from just inside the Chelmsford half delivered by Annison evaded the defence, Grace Birchall found space at the far post and fired the ball across goal which was turned home by an unfortunate defender for an own goal. It was a great start for the hosts and just reward for a high intensity start filled with quality.

Hethersett doubled their lead soon after as Mulley found room in the box but was soon surrounded by defenders, after a good touch she gave a defender no option but to haul her down and concede a penalty which was dispatched with some style by Emily Coates.

Just as Hethersett thought things couldn’t get much better, Grace Birchall went on a fine solo run which was finished off brilliantly by smashing the ball into the top corner giving the goalkeeper no chance at all to take the hosts into a fine 3-0 lead at half time.  It was a superb first half performance by such a young side, and Sophie Lubbock had very little to do showing the dominance held by Hethersett.

The second half was a different affair with Chelmsford coming out straight away determined to pull the game back, and early in the second half scored a well worked goal to give them hope of a comeback. The Essex side put Hethersett under massive amounts of pressure with no respite coming at all, but the girls were holding firm and limiting Chelmsford to long range efforts held well by Lubbock.

A turning point came when Stacey Annison felt the force of a massive tackle and was forced off for treatment, during which time a corner wasn’t cleared properly and one of the visiting players was able to poke the loose ball home. Annison was able to continue but had to be withdrawn shortly after, still feeling the effects of the injury.

Hethersett were being forced right onto the back foot and little service offered to Mulley and Middleton who worked tirelessly to try to stop the visitors breaking quickly. Rhianne Brister was introduced for her debut with 15 minutes to go in an attempt to keep things fresh. Hethersett were about to have their hearts broken as in the last seconds of normal time a hopeful cross was only half cleared and for the first time all afternoon a Chelmsford player was unchallenged in the box to head home past the despairing dive of Lubbock. It felt like a defeat to the home side after the work put into defending the lead that was so brilliantly achieved in the first 45 minutes, but they must take great heart from so comprehensively outplaying a very good and experienced side for a long period. The young players on debut were all excellent and met the challenge superbly, if the levels of commitment and performance are met every week then an exciting season lies ahead.

Hethersett Ladies look to be real title contenders after a fine away victory at Chelmsford.

With half the Eastern Region Premier Division season gone, Hethersett remain unbeaten at the top of the league and this week face another tough task when they visit Bedford.

Hethersett have stayed unbeaten despite suffering numerous injuries already this season and it is a testament to how quickly young players have adapted to senior football.

Grace Birchall was again on the goal trail on Sunday with a brace and she was excellently supported by the remainder of the team with Emma Mulley outstanding and the defence holding firm when put under pressure by a Chelmsford side who had come back from being 3-0 down at Hethersett to steal a point in the opening match of the season.

March 13th                               Peterborough    2    Hethersett    3

Hethersett Ladies have experienced the highs and lows over the past two weeks.

On Sunday they travelled to Peterborough in the Eastern Region Premier Division with a young and inexperienced team with an average age of 19 and came away with the points to keep up their title bid.

Goals from Grace Birchall, Lucy Middleton and Megan Todd keeps the side in fourth place in the league, still just three points behind leaders Bedford and with games in hand on second placed Arlesey and third placed Barking.

It wasn’t such good news the previous week as Hethersett relinquished their hold on the Eastern Region League Cup by going down 1-0 at Stevenage in the quarter-finals despite having the majority of the play. It was a sad day for Hethersett who were bidding to win the trophy for the fourth consecutive season.

TEAM - Sophie Lubbock, Kelly, Vicky Lubbock, Cannell, Birchall, Batch, Ellis, Todd, Mulley, Middleton, Thirtle, Charlie Swann, Bailey

March 20th  Coltishall Jaguars      2 Hethersett Athletic Ladies     4

Hethersett Ladies have reached the final of the Norfolk County Cup despite an horrendous injury list.

On Sunday they overcame the spirited challenge of Coltishall Jaguars and will now face Norwich Ladies in the final.

Despite having 12 players unavailable through injury of which seven have either had or are awaiting operations, Hethersett have had a remarkable season that sees them still in with a chance of winning the Eastern Region Women’s Premier Division. They are currently in fifth place, four points behind leaders Arlesey but with three games in hand.

Scorers against Coltishall were Lucy Middleton (2), Emma Mulley and Hannah Waters.

Hethersett Hearts’ match against Aylsham had to be cancelled due to the lengthy injury list:

“We have over 40 players signed for our two teams, but on Sunday only had 18 fit players. In all my years involved in ladies and girls football I have never come across injuries on this scale,” said Hethersett Athletic’s vice-chairman and Hearts manager Kevin Swann.

Despite the 5-1 score line this was a very good performance by our youngest side we have put out this season. Hethersett played some great football only to be caught out by Befords long ball game. the long ball over the top to centre forward Natasha caught us out twice early on. We pulled one back when Grace scored, but despite having far more of the ball and playing the better football we just couldn't live with the long ball game and the strength of the experienced Bedford side.
