October 23rd             Chelmsford City    0      Hethersett     7

Hethersett became the first ever ladies team to play a match at the home of Chelmsford City FC. This victory put them through to the third qualifying round of the Women's FA Cup.

Manager Chris Bolderstone reviews the match:

Hethersett embarked on the next journey of their FA Cup adventure, travelling to a Chelmsford side relegated from the Eastern Region Premier league last season, but enjoying a run of good form this year. It was to become a remarkable day of notable firsts for the club as the match unfolded. It is often said that football is a game of two halves, this match was to become a game of four quarters, with some defining moments of individual excellence.

Chelmsford started quickly, understandably so as this was the first time a ladies match had been competed at the home of Chelmsford City FC, an occasion which appeared to bring a few nerves to the travelling players. The hosts carved out by far the best opportunities of an opening 20 minutes, spending most of the time camped in Hethersett's half but found goalkeeper Amy Bell in inspired form, pulling off several stunning saves to keep the scores level. Hethersett were showing signs of panicking, but the brilliance of their goalkeeper gave them renewed belief and allowed them to grow into the game impressively, with Birchall creating a wonderful chance on the break for Megan Todd who was inches away from converting at the far post. Hethersett began to take control of the game and scored the opening goal, still somewhat against the overall balance of play, as Mulley wriggled free in the crowded penalty area to create a scrappy, well fought finish for Birchall. The visitors used this to spur them on and doubled their advantage soon after, excellent build up play allowed Rosie Rutherford to play a composed one-two with Mulley and curl a lovely shot into the top corner for her first goal with the first team and take Hethersett into the half time interval 2-0 ahead.

This season hasn't started brilliantly for Hethersett with some frustrating results, often caused by errors throwing away long periods of excellent work but the team was determined to ensure this didn't happen today. A change was forced at half time with Vicki Lubbock succumbing to a chest infection despite battling admirably in the first period, she was replaced by Stacey Annison making her first appearance in 51 weeks since suffering a serious knee injury. Annison joined Cannell at the heart of the Hethersett back 4 and found her place immediately, providing a base for a solid start to the second half which created further joy for the visitors. Grace Birchall struck early on to extend the advantage, a key goal with Chelmsford determined to fight back into the game. The hosts were finding themselves thwarted at every venture forwards with Sophie Lubbock keeping the lively left winger very quiet after she had dominated the first half. Two minutes later Hethersett moved into an unassailable lead, more excellent build up play led to Charlie Swann threading a through ball for Mulley who won her battle with the keeper and smashed home from 2 yards.

With half an hour to go and the match moving towards an inevitable conclusion, Hethersett took full control and Mabel Beckett was introduced for the lively Ramm, the youngster immediately making her presence known with an energetic display to shore up the middle. Shannon Kelly's delivery from set pieces was superb and a constant threat, and eventually got a reward for an assist - an inch perfect corner met by Birchall with a thumping header to secure her first ever hat trick for the club. Birchall then turned provider with another through ball, Mulley's persistence causing confusion between defender and goalkeeper allowing her an open goal. A second hat trick almost came as Mulley followed up Birchall's shot with an effort cleared off the line. Lauren Bailey was introduced to replace Megan Todd whose direct running and energy had caused all sorts of problems for the entire game, and with the match over as a contest Hethersett began to show a confidence not yet seen this season and saved the best goal for last. Bailey drifted inside to initiate a prolonged period of possession around the host's penalty area which culminated in a frustrated foul 25 yards out. Mulley stepped up to hit a free kick which was parried by the goalkeeper, the ball falling to Bailey 15 yards from goal who absolutely smashed into the top corner with her left foot for her first goal of the season.

Hethersett saw the game out comfortably, to become the first ladies team to win at this ground, and move into the 3rd qualifying round for the first time in the club's history where they will play host to South East Combination side Enfield Town.
